A Little Too Much

Angry. Sad. Drowning. Confused. Embarrassed. Wishful. Crumbling.

The Universe is seriously testing me lately. I feel like I keep getting to this same point in time where I just can’t handle life anymore. Things are being thrown at me in all directions, and I just don’t think I’m doing the best job juggling it all – which seriously hurts my confidence because I pride myself on being able “to deal.”

Tonight, one thing led to another, and everything that’s been bottled up just exploded. I tried so hard “to deal” again tonight – to just sleep off the frustrating anger, the crippling sadness, the unbearable feeling of drowning, the constant confusion, the cringe-worthy embarrassment, the wishful thinking that circumstances could be different – that I could be different, and the crumbling feeling that makes me feel like I’m breaking apart.

I try “to deal” because I know I’m not alone. I don’t believe that there is a single soul out there who hasn’t felt what I’m feeling. I know for a fact that there are also plenty who have also had it so much worse than me. Nevertheless, I just couldn’t deal tonight. Tonight…was just a little too much.

Everyone keeps saying how inspirational I am – how strong and put-together I am. Little do they know I’m struggling so much more than they could ever imagine. So many put me on a pedestal that I wish so much I wasn’t being put on, because at the end of the day, I know how “human” I am. Literally, I am just like everyone else. I am no better, no worse, no cooler, no smarter, no nicer than anyone else. I am just a girl who’s trying to find herself and her place in the world like everyone else.

But, despite the fact that I hate being put on this pedestal because of how ostracized it makes me feel, I can’t completely bring myself to break down my walls to show all my raw and vulnerable sides. It makes me so uncomfortable to show people how “human” I am sometimes. I’m not completely sure why, but I think it may be because of the façade I’ve been keeping up for so long. It takes a lot of work, mentally, physically, and emotionally, to keep up the strong front, but honestly, I think it takes so much more out of me to let the front down and to let the raw and vulnerable be bared to the world.

This was definitely an emotional rant with no pre-planned goal or point to be made, and I’m slightly worried that it’s not the most eloquent or entertaining post out there. So, let me end this post with a more positive twist. Like I said before, we’ve all been there – when things just get a little too much – right? Well, like Shawn Mendes says in his song, A Little Too Much, “Sometimes it all gets a little too much, but you gotta realize that soon the fog will clear up, and you don’t have to be afraid, because we’re all the same, and we know that sometimes it all gets a little too much.” We know now that we’re not alone when it comes to these dark moments, but what’s really cool is realizing that there is always a brighter moment waiting for us after a dark one. Our lives aren’t pre-written novels; each day is a new page – each phase of our lives a new chapter. If we’re not satisfied with a circumstance, we have the ability to rewrite – to re-imagine, re-define, and re-create. I am a firm believer in all of us having more power and control than we all think we do. I know our “fog” will clear and that we’ll find our sunshine soon. Let’s make a promise to positively look forward to all that is still yet to be written in our book of life – no matter how raw or vulnerable, no matter how much it may be to deal with. The year 2017 has only just begun, let’s pick ourselves up and slay with all we’ve got!

Roommates: A Tribute to the Unsung Heroes of College Life

When you think about college, you think about partying until 4AM every Thursday through Saturday, studying your butt off day in and day out, making new friends and memories constantly, and finding adventure at seemingly every turn. What you forget about, are your roommates, and I’m not talking about the horror story roommates that steal your belongings, trash the room, or are just pure evil. I’m talking about the roommates that go wild with you every Thursday through Saturday and occasionally Monday through Wednesday too. I’m talking about the roommates that are studying away beside you in the library cubicles on the second floor and leaving you cute notes of encouragement. I’m talking about the roommates that embark on these adventures throughout college with you – feeling every emotion with you, fighting every obstacle with you, and accepting you at your absolute worse while also celebrating with you when you’re at your very best. I am talking about the roommates that become your family – the roommates who prove themselves to be the unsung heroes of college life.

I was seriously one of the lucky ones who somehow scored awesome roommates. Neither of them was perfect by any means, but nothing’s really perfect in this world, and they were just more than I could have ever asked for. This year, and especially this past spring semester, was nothing short of intense. It was a time filled with big changes, more demanding expectations, a plethora of failures, and a huge onslaught of emotions that I didn’t and couldn’t really handle. But this post isn’t a reflection or a synopsis about my crazy year. This post is a tribute to the two people who got me through it all and to whom I didn’t thank enough to.

When I had formal event after formal event and seemingly no more clothes to wear, my girls were there to offer up two more closets filled with options. When my heart fluttered over another boy, my girls were there to push me into him and fill me with courage when I was feeling that I lacked some. Whenever I felt beaten down and frustrated beyond belief, my girls were there to pick me back up and to offer themselves up as listening ears or shoulders to cry on. When I was torn apart by the stress and sick to the point of trembling beyond control, my girls were there to drug me up and tuck me into bed. When the armor I put on every day started to chip away, my girls were there to act as my shield and sword – protecting me from the big bad world when I wasn’t at my 100%.

The words ‘thank you’ don’t quite capture how much gratitude lies in my heart, and the words ‘I love you’ can’t quite seem to demonstrate the amount of affection and adoration I have overflowing in my heart. But for a lack of better words, thank you to my two roommates. Thank you for stepping up and becoming my family when I felt completely incapable and alone. Thank you for all that you have done, and I love you both for all that you two are and are for me. Emma, Dal, you two were the unsung heroes of my college life, and I hope you two enjoyed the little tribute.

The First Hello

I’ve been having some serious trouble starting this blog, especially since a post starting with “Hi, I’m Val, and it’s lovely to meet you all!” doesn’t seem to quite suffice in this situation. But, unfortunately, it’s the only way I really know how to start, so let’s just run with it, shall we?

Hi, I’m Val, and it’s lovely to “e-meet” you all. First and foremost, welcome to my blog! It’s still a work in progress, but I hope you’ll stick around, give it a chance, and watch it blossom into something awesome.

Now, who am I? Well, I’m a lifelong student, a beloved daughter, an annoying little sister, a loyal fraternity brother, a supportive sorority sister, a hungry traveler, a lover of sleep, a dance party animal, a car-jamming fool, an avid reader, a wannabe hiker, a social media addict, an Italian food enthusiast, and a transformational leader. But in addition to all that I am, there are also three aims that I wake up promising to stand by and go to sleep hoping that I’ve accomplished during my day: to be enthusiastic in all that I do, to be proactive despite any obstacles that may appear, and to always be inspired to inspire.

So, what will my blog be about? Definitely not how to turn your room into Zen central with minimalistic décor or what the latest trends are because the universe knows I’m no fashionista. What you will find on my blog are posts about life, love, and everything in between, about travels and new discoveries, and about personal happenings with my thoughts and opinions attached to them. My goal is to share my experience, to do a little inspiring, and to take my readers on a seemingly ordinary journey that ends up being pretty extraordinary at moments.

As Buddha once said, “There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth; not going all the way, and not starting.” So I’m taking the first step by starting, and I’ll take the next by promising you all as my readers to keep going – to keep writing. So what do you say? Care to join me on this adventure society calls life?
